Guillermo's blog

A Some people think that the arrival of big money in sports has created benefits for everyone. They say that sports like football and tennis and even the Olympics are better and more competitive now, but I disagree. In my opinion, sport is now obsessed with money and this has negative consequences for a number of reasons.

B Firstly, organizations like football and basketball clubs are more global than local these days, specially the rich ones. These rich clubs can often afford to spend money like water to buy the best players in the world. As small clubs don't have the same amount of money to spend, they can't compete for decent players. This doesn't seem fair to me at all.

C Secondly, since sports stars get paid so well now, the clubs need more and more money to afford to pay them. Consequently, some clubs have decided to raise the price of the tickets for live events. This means that the only people who can afford to go are quite rich people. Therefore, crowds have become more elitist. Finally, clubs don't invest much money in developing sport, so the average sportsperson doesn't even have the facilities they need to practice sports in their local community.

D I agree that money is important in sport because it allows clubs to become competitive, but it seems to me that the current situation will work to the advantages of the rich clubs only.
